Um arcebispo jacobeu na Baía colonial? D. Luís Álvares de Figueiredo: carreira, redes e acção episcopal

Resumo

RESUMO: O presente artigo visa investigar a formação, a carreira e a
atuação do sexto arcebispo da Bahia, D. Luís Álvares de Figueiredo, dando
particular atenção aos indícios que nos permitem afiançar a aliança deste antístite ao movimento rigorista de reforma religiosa conhecido como Jacobeia. Para isto buscamos analisar a rede clientelar na qual este religioso esteve integrado, assim como o seu estilo de vida e a possível influência que a piedade jacobeia exerceu na sua atuação frente ao arcebispado da Bahia, entre os anos de 1725 e 1735.

ABSTRACT: This article analyzes the education, the career and the action
of the sixth archbishop of Bahia, Luís Alves de Figueiredo, highlighting those
indications that allow us to consider his belonging to the Jacobeia, a Catholic
rigorist movement that seeked religious reformation. In order to achieve that goal, we will look closely to the clientele network in which he was involved, but also to his own lifestyle and to the possible influence of the Jacobeia’s piety in his actuation at the head of the archbishopric of Bahia, between 1725 and 1735.
