Resumo

Several documents attest the passage of St. Francis of Assisi through the Iberian Peninsula during one of his attempts to reach Morocco. According to some authors of the Modern Period, in one of these occasions, the saint would have passed through Portugal and founded convents, tradition that would gain different trends and versions. The hypothesis of this study is that this symbolic construction aimed at reaffirming the importance of the Portuguese Order of Friars Minor in the construction of a universal, catholic and Luso-Franciscan empire.
