La leyenda y milagros de la virgen de Guadalupe en el teatro hispanoamericano de principios del XVII

Maria Eugenia Díaz

Resumo

The apparitions of the Virgin of Guadalupe in literary works are constant and most of the time aimed at promoting the worship. An example is this rare short play, Comedia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y sus milagros by friar Diego de Ocaña, written and performed in the Department of Chuquisaca, Spanish American region where Ocaña was carrying out the mission of evangelizing and promoting the worship of Guadalupe, ordered by the priests of the Order of Saint Jerome from the Guadalupe monastery (Cáceres).
This article reports on Father Ocaña’s predicaments and on those of the manuscript containing the Relación of his voyage and the Comedia. And the contents of the Comedia are compared with the Leyenda of the discovery and foundation of Guadalupe, according to codex 1 of Guadalupe’s Monastery Archive.
