Resumo

The present study focuses on the grammaticalization of the verb want leading to the emergence of four grammatical categories: the future, proximative, avertive
and concessive. The main objective of this study is to reveal the logic behind the changes that generated the four categories. It will be shown that generally the logic in question is the same in all four cases, which suggests that the meanings discussed here make up a set of related grammatical categories. The common denominator shared by the four meanings is a result of persistence (Hopper 1991) which preserved it as traces of the original content of the verb want.
