Abstract

Minos is the dialogue that precedes the Laws in the traditional organization from Trasyllus. The text is now gaining acceptance as an authentic dialogue of Plato, and no one in the ancient tradition appears to have questioned this dialogue. But this interesting dialogue, and one of the earliest texts on Law risks being a classic, that no one actually reads. The paper includes, along with a new Portuguese translation, an introduction that presents briefly the problems of authenticity and a debate of the role of the dialogue within the Platonic corpus. We contend that the dialogue is a useful if not necessary prelude to the Laws. Only this text permits the full understanding of the texts where Socrates is absent, whose scenario is far away from Athens and that establishes the framework of the action of Plato’s most long work, presenting both the arguments and dramatic themes necessary.

Resumo

O Minos é o diálogo que precede as Leis na organização tradicional. O texto tem ganho aceitação como um diálogo autêntico e ninguém na tradição antiga o pôs em questão. Mas um dos primeiros textos devotado à questão do direito arrisca-se a ser reconhecido como um clássico – que ninguém lê. Este artigo inclui, com uma breve referência ao estado da questão sobre a autenticidade, uma nova tradução para português deste diálogo. Há três razões para considerar o diálogo uma introdução necessária à IX tetralogia do Corpus Platonicum: só a sua leitura estabelece o contexto dos únicos textos de Platão onde Sócrates está completamente ausente, aponta as razões porque não decorrem em Atenas e explica o intrigante papel do rei lendário Minos. A elucidação da questão exigiria confrontar o diálogo com os restantes e compreender a intenção autor, explicando do mesmo passo as particularidades dum texto tão interessante como estranho.
