Resumo

This paper addresses the book Viagens em Marrocos by Ruy da Câmara, published in 1879. Less a travel diary than the draft of an essay on Morocco from a personal experience and a diversity of sources, this book is the oldest in Portugal on this topic and it is very little known. The general appreciation of the territory, its culture and its inhabitants is largely negative, because of a Eurocentric approach.
