La difusión popular de la faceta ermita de San Jerónimo en el siglo XVII español

Resumo

The episode of Saint Jeremy’s hermitic retreat in Syria was passed on in a variety of forms throughout the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age. At certain periods the readings of the gentiles by the saint or the temptations suffered in hermitage were emphasized; but in the 17th century the most outstanding features of his life of retreat were devotion, sacrifice and pain. This
evolution of the image of the hermit and its broad popularization during the baroque period are obvious in the poem delt with in this article.
The representations of the figure of the saint have evolved as well throughout history, and this graphic tradition is enriched by other visual/literary forms like emblems, allegories and symbols, elements well known by the author of the «Canción Real». The short analysis of the elements that make this text different from other stories of the saint is completed with a list of the printed and handwritten copies that spread this composition during the 17th century, and with a complete transcription of the poem.
